Course: Radiography - Plain X-rays in the Adult/Pediatric

Module: Image Interpretation of the Paediatric Skeleton: Bones of the Thorax and Spine

Module Description:
Audience: US Radiographers. This activity is approved by ASRT for 1.0 Category A+ CE credit.
Description:This session will focus on the anatomy and bone development of the bones of the thorax and the spine. A systematic approach to assessing x-rays will be discussed. The session will describe common injuries, fractures and dislocations that may occur in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar-sacral spine, the ribs and sternum. It will give examples of normal variants and congenital abnormalities. These will be illustrated using x-ray images.


Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Identify the anatomy of the sternum, ribs and the cervical, thoracic and lumbar-sacral spines on x-ray images
• Assess x-rays of the sternum, ribs and the cervical, thoracic and lumbar-sacral spines using a systematic approach
• Identify and describe common fractures and dislocations of the sternum, ribs and the cervical, thoracic and lumbar-sacral spines
• Recognise normal variants which may be mistaken for a fracture or pathology
