Module: HPV- Implications for Dentistry & Periodontal Diseases, Cardiovascular Health, and Stroke

Module Description: Oral Health and the Connected Body Symposium
Friday, October 2, 2015
TITLE: HPV- Implications for Dentistry

SPEAKER: Jo-Anne Jones, RDH
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Over 50% of sexually active Americans will have an HPV (Human papillomavirus) infection in their lifetime. This is fueling an escalating rise in the incidence of HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer. By the year 2020, HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer is expected to be the leading HPV-related cancer surpassing cervical cancer. There is an urgent need for changing the way in which we assess, screen and manage today’s dental patient based on new evidence.

PARTICIPANT OBJECTIVES:
By attending this course, participants will be able to:
* Discuss critical information regarding today’s oral cancer profile every health professional needs to know
* Recognize high risk extraoral/intraoral anatomical areas & subtle life-saving symptoms in the HPV profile
* Emerge with clinical resources to translate knowledge directly into clinical practice.

TITLE: Periodontal Diseases, Cardiovascular Health, and Stroke
SPEAKER: Souvik Sen, MD, MS, MPH, FAHA
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Periodontal diseases may cause local and systemic inflammation, and growing evidence proposes that periodontal infection may be linked to an increase in atherosclerosis-induced conditions, such as stroke. Periodontal diseases will continue to be associated with risk factors for stroke and stroke itself. Mounting evidence suggests that treatment and prevention of periodontitis may result in the reduction of this risk.

PARTICIPANT OBJECTIVES:
By attending this course, participants will be able to:
* Understand the definition of stroke
*Comprehend how periodontal disease leads to cerebrovascular disease
*Recognize the potential link between periodontal disease and stroke, to include the oral-systemic pathway.
