Module: NMT/RT Part 2: Anatomy & Physiology - Endocrine

Audience: Radiologic Technologists and Nuclear Medicine Technologists
Prerequisities: None
This endocrine course provides a review of the endocrine system with an emphasis on assessment, treatment and care of the patient with endocrine disorders most commonly encountered in critical care. The specific endocrine disorders covered include: Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone, adrenal insufficiency, pheochromocytoma, Cushing’s syndrome, Addison’s disease and hypoparathyroidism.


This activity may be available in multiple formats or from different sponsors. ARRT regulations state that an individual may not repeat a self-learning activity for credit if it was reported in the same or anysubsequent biennium.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to
• describe the anatomy and physiology of the endocrine system, including the function of various hormones and associated physiological effects;
• compare the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostics, treatment, and nursing care management of a patient with syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone to those of a patient with diabetes insipidus;
• identify the etiology and the signs and symptoms of a patient with Cushing’s syndrome and describe the diagnostics and treatments used;
• identify the etiology and the signs and symptoms of a patient with Addisonian crisis and describe the diagnostics and treatments used;
• identify the etiology and the signs and symptoms of a patient with a pheochromocytoma and describe the diagnostics and treatments used;
• identify the etiology and the signs and symptoms of a patient with hyperthyroid crisis and myxedema coma and describe the diagnostics and treatments used for each; and
• identify the etiology and the signs and symptoms of a patient with hypoparathyroidism and describe the diagnostics and treatments used.
