Course: Ultrasound Product Training - CE Credit

Module: Echocardiography: Measuring up to Standards, Cardiac Mechanics

Module Description:
This course focuses on echocardiographic measurements according to established standards. The topics include quantification of valvular stenosis and regurgitation, performance of cardiac chamber measurements and myocardial performance both systolic and diastolic.


This course will take approximately 1 hour to complete.


There are no prerequisites for this course.

Objectives
The Myocardial Mechanics Basic Concepts section will:
• Describe the basics of myocardial mechanics
• Explain myocardial deformation
• Explain the concept of speckle tracking echocardiography (STE)
• Summarize STE strain and strain rate imaging waveforms
• Discuss clinical applications of strain and strain rate imaging


The Myocardial Mechanics Speckle section will:
• Define speckle in ultrasound images
• Define a kernel as used in speckle tracking


The Myocardial Mechanics Strain and Strain Rate section will:
• Define strain and strain rate
• Discuss Lagrangian strain
• Recognize a strain waveform
• Discuss the differences in Doppler tissue imaging (DTI) and speckle for strain analysis
• Identify the different types of strain


The Myocardial Mechanics Global Longitudinal Strain section will:
• Define Global Longitudinal Strain (GLS)
• Discuss why GLS is a useful measurement
• Recognize Philips aCMQ


The Myocardial Mechanics Clinical Uses section will:
• Describe GLS and it's potential to predict cardiac events
• Discuss GLS and heart failure
• Explain GLS and imaging cancer patients during chemotherapy
• Recall potential pitfalls that may affect GLS measurements


The Diastolic Function Basic Concepts section will:
• Describe the principles of diastolic function
• Review the causes of diastolic dysfunction


Diastolic Function Measurements section will:
• Illustrate the mitral inflow pattern and discuss abnormal patterns
• Give examples of the pulmonary inflow pattern and discuss abnormal patterns
• Describe the significance of the IVRT measurement
• Summarize the use of tissue Doppler analysis of mitral annular motion
• Explain Color m-mode flow propagation velocity
