Module: Cultural Competence and the Dental Hygiene Process of Care

Module Description: This course is designed to explore the concepts of cultural competence as related to the delivery of dental health care. The lecture content, case discussions and additional reading will provide the background to move along the cultural competence continuum towards cultural proficiency. Self-assessment is critical to understanding and applying principles to the dental hygiene process of care.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course the participants will be able to:
• Define culture, cultural competence and cultural sensitivity
• Differentiate race and ethnicity
• Discuss cultural barriers to communication
• Discuss how culture relates to the dental hygiene process of care
• Describe how cultural and linguistic competence can be obtained

About the author: Cheryl Westphal Theile, EdD, RDH  is currently Assistant Dean for Allied Health Programs at New York University College of Dentistry. She was the Vice President for Allied Dental Program Directors of the American Dental Education Association from 2006-2009.  Serving as President of American Dental Hygienists’ Association 1984-1985 Dr. Westphal Theile still serves in many capacities on advisory boards, journal reviews and committees for ADHA and ADEA.  Dr. Westphal Theile is a contributing author and editor for Comprehensive Periodontics for the Dental Hygienist with Weinberg, Westphal Theile, Froum, Segelnick, 4rd edition, and Weinberg, Westphal Theile and Fine for Oral Pharmacology for the Dental Hygienist, 2nd edition. Dr. Westphal Theile presents and publishes on cultural competence, periodontics, and dental hygiene care planning.
