Module: Clinical Application of Ventilator Waveforms and Trending

Module Description: This presentation is targeted to respiratory therapists and other clinicians interested in enhancing their knowledge of ventilator graphics and is designed to provide the learner with an introduction to ventilator graphics and the basic skills needed to interpret them. The first section examines the normal characteristics of ventilator waveforms and then reviews abnormal waveform patterns and discusses the clinical significance of each. The last section reviews the applications of trending patient data. You must receive a score of 90% or better on the post test to receive your certificate.

Learning Objectives
• Identify components of ventilator waveforms.
• Recognize at least three abnormal scalar and two abnormal loop waveforms.
• Identify patient-ventilator asynchrony and describe two ways to improve synchrony.
• Describe two clinical scenarios in which waveforms help optimize ventilator settings.
• Discuss two clinical scenarios in which trending patient data can be used to optimize ventilator management.
