Course: Radiation Physics & Safety, Radiography

Module: Radiation Safety in the Operating Room

Module Description:
Audience: All radiologic technologists that work in the operating room.
Prerequisites: None
Skill Level: Introductory
This module offers a look at radiation safety in the operating room environment. A historical overview of units of radiation measurement will be given along with discussion on the principles of "As Low As Reasonably Achievable" (ALARA), radiation protection of both personnel and patient, as well as, sharing knowledge on types of radiation generating equipment utilized in the operating room (OR) and the approximate radiation exposures for some diagnostic OR) procedures.


Learning Objectives
After studying the information presented, the learner will be able to:
* Understand units of radiation: Both conventional and Systeme Internationale (SI)
* Discuss proper radiation protection for patients and personnel
* Describe the principles of ALARA
* Recognize the types of radiation generating equipment used in the OR

About the author:

Aimee J. Phillips, M.S.R.T. (R)(M)(CV) obtained her Masters in Community Health Education from W.V.U.  She has an extensive background in radiology including certifications as a radiographer, mammographer, and special procedures technologist and is currently pursuing certification in quality management.   Her career at Marietta Memorial began in 2000 and she has been a member of the MMH Staff Development team since early 2008.  She served as a clinical instructor and program director at two different radiology school programs prior to coming to Marietta.  Both of these roles required curriculum design and instruction, as well as knowledge of accreditation standards and functions.  Currently, she is responsible for assessment, planning, development and delivering needs based and required education for both clinical and non-clinical areas. Aimee has published several professional articles in RT Image, ASRT Scanner and the ASRT Journal.
