Module Description: Medical Emergencies: Essentials for the Dental Professional

Dental hygiene and dental visits still remain anxiety-inducing experiences for some patients. This heightened anxiety level can increase the risk of medical emergencies occurring during appointments. This webinar will utilize case scenarios to promote the determination of the correct emergency diagnosis and the proper treatment procedures to be rendered by the dental professional in the event that an emergency should arise. This two part program will begin with basic information including vital signs and emergency preparation. The remainder of part one will cover 5 medical emergencies (syncope, angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, pacemaker/ICD malfunction, cerebrovascular accident and hyperventilation. Part II will cover the following emergencies: asthma attack, allergy from mild to anaphylaxis, diabetic emergencies (diabetic ketoacidosis and hypoglycemia), seizures and broken dental instrument tips. Highlighted will be the prevention of medical emergencies by the use of appropriate assessment procedures prior to treatment.

Course Objectives:

1. State the rationale for baseline vital signs.

2. Understand the importance of medical emergency simulation.

3. Understand the importance of current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.

4. Recognize the symptoms of several medical emergencies that may occur in the dentaloffice.

5. Explain the emergency procedure to be followed for several medical emergencies that may occur in the dental office.

6. Identify essential emergency equipment for the emergency kit.

About the author: Dr. Grimes is the Dental Hygiene Program Director at the Vermont Technical College. Prior to the transition of the program to Vermont Tech she taught in the Dental Hygiene Department at the University of Vermont since 1984. Her areas of expertise are the Dental Sciences, Medical Emergencies, Clinical Dental Hygiene, Oral Pathology and the Administration of Local Anesthetics. She was the recipient of the 2001 UVM Kroepsch Maurice Award for teaching excellence. She recently published the textbook Medical Emergencies: Essentials for the Dental Professional.

Ellen received her Baccalaureate Degree in Dental Hygiene Education from the University of Bridgeport, Fones School of Dental Hygiene. She earned a Master's Degree in Educational Psychology from Montclair State University and a second Master's Degree in Public Administration from the University of Vermont. She earned a Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at UVM in 1999.

Ellen was the President of the Vermont Dental Hygienists' Association from 1993-1994 and has served that organization in numerous capacities over the past 25 years. In 1998 she was honored with the VDHA Outstanding Dental Hygienist of the Year Award. She was appointed to the ADHA Council on Regulation and Practice in 2009. In addition, she was appointed as an accreditation site visitor for the ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation in 1999 and served on the Dental Hygiene Review Committee for the Commission from 2003-2007. She is a consultant for the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners and serves on its Examination Committee. Ellen is a Past-President of the Summa Chapter of the Sigma Phi Alpha Dental Hygiene Honor Society.
