Course Information

Course: College of Radiographers CPD Endorsed, Medical Dosimetry, Nuclear Medicine/PET

Module: Part 1 Introduction to Positron Emission Tomography (PET)

Module Description: Audience: All medical professionals interested in learning at PET.
Prerequisites: None
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is an exciting new modality that measures the metabolic activity of cells in the human body. PET is an important modality because PET images can demonstrate pathologic changes in the human body before they are seen on the other imaging modalities. In Part 1 of the four part series on Introduction to PET, we will review “What is PET Imaging?” the physical principles of PET, instrumentation, radiopharmaceuticals, and PET imaging systems, including PET/CT.

Learning Objectives
* Summarize the main areas of clinical application for PET imaging.
* Discuss the basic physics of PET.
* Describe coincidence events and factor degrading PET images.
* Describe the components of a PET scanner.
* Discuss the PET radiopharmaceuticals and understand what they do.
* Explain the main differences between Molecular Imaging, PET Imaging, and SPECT.
* Distinguish between image fusion and combined PET/CT imaging.
