Sub Category: Breast

Case Study: Breast - Intraductal Papilloma

Case Study Description: Audience: All breast imaging practitioners can benefit from this case study review, which illustrates the unique information that each imaging modality provides to reach a diagnostic conclusion.
This learning exercise provides information regarding intraductal papillomas of the breast. The information is presented in a case study format. By reviewing the medical history and the test results from several diagnostic modalities, the reader will be able to characterize the pathology. This learning exercise provides a case study format. Not only will you learn about the ultrasound findings associated with the pathology, in addition these findings will also be correlated with other imaging modalities. Modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and the gold standard for breast imaging; mammography. This case study will illustrate the unique information that each imaging modality, clinical exam, or test provides to reach a diagnostic conclusion. In addition, the library section contains further information regarding the pathology and a more in depth description of procedures and materials used for these diagnostic tests. This case study will be helpful for learners in understanding and defining what intraductal papilloma of the breast is and how to reach diagnostic conclusions based on the information obtained.

After review of this case study, as well as the discussion provided in the library, the learner will be able to:
* Identify the etiology and clinical symptoms of intraductal papillomas.
* Recommend mammographic imaging procedures to identify the ducts of the breast.
* Investigate the treatment for intraductal papilloma.
* Assess the importance of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast, especially in regards to the ductal system.
* Compare galactography of the breast to studies in ultrasound and MRI.
* Contrast the radial and antiradial scanning planes used in ultrasound imaging of the breast.
